The Cookie Theory
“Every great relationship starts with empathy — and sometimes, a cookie.”
-Patrick Howell
It was the first day after flight restrictions were lifted following 9/11. I caught a business flight to Phoenix. At the time, as a dark-haired, single man traveling alone, I was profiled as a potential flight risk and taken into custody for a full security search. The flight was delayed, turbulence was strong, and one of my bags didn’t arrive. I’d woken at 4 a.m. Eastern to go to the gym, work a full day, and catch that flight. When I finally reached my hotel around 1 a.m. Mountain Time, I was exhausted, frustrated, and completely drained. The woman at the hotel front desk must have sensed my stress. She checked me in quickly and kindly, doing everything she could not to add to my frustration. As I walked toward the elevator, I heard the soft ding of a microwave from behind the desk. Then came the unmistakable aroma of a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie. I turned, our eyes met, and she smiled as she slid a warm cookie and a small carton of milk across the counter.
That simple act of kindness stopped me in my tracks. I sat down in the lobby, took a bite, and felt the tension lift. With every bite I could feel my blood pressure becoming lower and I began to relax. I could feel myself becoming human again. The cookie grounded me with a feeling of security, comfort, and the ability to become approachable. It reminded me that empathy and small gestures can completely change someone’s state of mind and influenced our approach to financial planning.
At Triple Crown Financial Services, we call it the “Cookie Theory.” It’s the idea that before we can truly help someone make financial decisions, we need to help them feel comfortable, understood, and at ease. Our clients often come to us facing big changes, retirement, family transitions, or career shifts. These moments can be stressful. Applying the Cookie Theory means creating an environment of calm, trust, and understanding. One where blood pressure drops, thinking clears, and good decisions follow naturally. It’s more than a metaphor; it’s a philosophy.
If you ever stop by one of our offices, you’ll often find a plate of cookies and a fresh pot of coffee (or milk, if you prefer). They’re a small reminder of what drives everything we do, genuine care, kindness, and the belief that even the smallest gesture can make a big difference.
